Kystriksveien: Earth's Most Gorgeous Road Trip

Dec 05, 2022 By Juliana Daniel

Norway's coastal route from Stiklestad to the Arctic city of Bod is a 670-kilometer trek between two different worlds.

It's also one of the world's most breathtaking drives. Central Norway, with its meticulously tended fields and oxblood-red wooden cottages, is at one extreme of the spectrum, representing the country's peaceful elegance.

At the opposite end comes the stark, tranquil beauty of the Arctic, with its glaciers, ice-capped mountains, and endless horizons. The Kystriksveien links the two, and it follows a winding course down the coast, bucking and weaving through steep terrain to the Arctic. This route is also known as the Coastal Way or Fv17.

What Is The Length of Kystriksveien Coastal Road?

Norwegian County Road 17 spans an impressive 630 kilometers (390 miles), connecting the county seat of Steinkjer in Trndelag with the county seat of Bod in Nordland, the largest urban area and municipality in the region. One of the "101 World's Most Scenic Routes," as proclaimed by National Geographic. The route leads past quaint fishing hamlets, hidden beaches, and towering peaks.

How Long Does The Kystriksveien Coastal Road Take To Travel?

This route is twisty and tight in spots, but it's entirely paved, and you have to take at least six boat rides that take anything from ten minutes to an hour each. Most people will need between 7 and 10 hours to drive the entire route without stopping, but you should give yourself at least 4 to 5 days to explore Kystriksveien. There are many exciting stops along the way, so give yourself plenty of time.

Should We Go Down Kystriksveien Coastal Road?

The route passes through some of the world's most stunning environments. Numerous islands along Kystriksveien can be reached by ferry or boat. Give yourself time to stop and look around. Traveling the winding Kystriksveien will reward you with stunning views of the region's cultural landscape.

Torghatten, the De Syv Sastre mountain range, the Svartisen glacier, and the Saltstraumen whirlpools are well-known attractions you'll see along the way. Beautiful fjords may be seen throughout the route.

Some of these fjords are more than a kilometer deep and extend for more than 200 kilometers inland, carved by glaciers over the eons.

Bikecation With Baggage In Northern Norway

With our bike trip that includes luggage transport, you may experience one of the most beautiful sections of the Kystriksveien and the Helgeland shore. The excursion begins and concludes in Brnnysund, a picturesque seaside village.

Less than a week from now, we will go to Northern Norway to see the unique islands of Vega, Henry, and Donna, experience the quaint atmosphere of Sandnessjen, and dine on a traditional dinner at one of the region's oldest marketplaces.

Vacation Bike Tour Along The Helgeland Coast

If you want a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is also highly well-organized, this is the trip for you. Rental of brand-new, high-quality bicycles, lodging, daily breakfast, packed lunches, two dinners, transportation of luggage in a companion car and a convenient and exciting daily schedule are all included. We take care of the details so you can relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery on your vacation without worrying about anything.

Stunning European Coastline

It's the most beautiful coastline in Europe, Anneke agreed. "Joost first declined to attend. He used to enjoy it, but now he can't get enough of it. True enough. There's always something fresh along this route to see." Like all Norwegian ferries, the ferry came on schedule and was loaded and unloaded with the usual Scandinavian efficiency.

Over on the other side, in the little Norwegian settlement of Nesna, the road followed the contours of the fjords, past stilted cottages and stone fences as though following the edge of the northern European continent.

Travel Suggestions

Torghatten, De Syv Sastre, the Svartisen glacier, and Saltstraumen are just a few of the well-known attractions that can be found along Kystriksveien. A World Heritage Center was established in 2019 on the island of Vega.

Incredible natural scenery and fascinating little towns await you along this picturesque route. I recommend renting a bike and exploring some of the islands. Take your time, and don't rush. Those hoping to exercise during their vacation will not be disappointed by the abundance of fantastic hiking routes.

Despite its tiny size, the island of Leka boasts more than 50 official hiking paths. To those who aren't scared of heights, mountains such as De Syv Sostre, Dnnamannen, and Heilhornet await.

Kystriksveien Coastal Road: What You Should Know

There isn't a ton of traffic throughout the week, but things get up on the weekends and during the busiest part of the Christmas season. Grocery stores and gas stations are both conveniently located nearby. Inmates in the 1940s labored on the construction of this. If you want to travel, check the forecast first, as the path is considerably more pleasant when the weather is excellent.
